You may be tired of a repeated routine, missing attention and conversation, or questioning whether the relationship still fits. Start by describing what feels absent rather than deciding that your partner is a boring person.

The next step depends on that distinction. A different date plan may help when you both want more variety. It will not resolve pressure, dishonesty or a major difference in what you want.

FIND PEOPLE NEAR YOU

I'm aMan looking for womenMan looking for men/option>Woman looking for menWoman looking for women

LocationUKEast Midlands - EnglandEast Of EnglandLondonNorth East EnglandNorth West EnglandNorthern IrelandScotlandSouth East EnglandSouth West EnglandWalesWest Midlands - EnglandYorkshire & The Humber - England

JOIN NOW

Name the part that feels repetitive

Think about a recent week. Was the problem doing the same thing every evening, only talking about chores, having little time alone together, or feeling that your interests no longer meet? Consider whether you feel bored mainly in this relationship or across much of your life.

Comfort and excitement are not the same experience. You may value predictable time together while wanting something new occasionally. You may also realise that “bored” is the word you have been using for feeling unheard. Be specific enough that the other person can understand what you mean.

For a different perspective, the Human Performance Resources by CHAMP guide to relationship boredom discusses shared experiences, individual interests and support. Those are options to explore, not a guarantee that any particular relationship should continue.

Start a conversation without delivering a verdict

Choose a time when neither of you is rushing. Try: “I miss doing things together that aren’t chores. Would you be up for planning something different this weekend?” That gives a concrete example and a possible next step.

If the issue is deeper, say so: “I’ve been feeling disconnected, and I’d like to understand how things feel for you.” Ask what they miss too. Avoid declaring that they must entertain you or comparing them with an idealised version of someone else.

Do not use a discussion about routine to dismiss harm. If you feel afraid to disagree or face threats and controlling behaviour, see our guide to recognising harmful relationships and finding support. A new activity is not the answer to that situation.

Try one change you would both choose

Keep the experiment small and affordable. Cook a dish neither of you has tried, choose a local exhibition, play a game or plan a short outing with time to talk. Take turns suggesting something so that one person is not responsible for all the effort.

Decide what would make the plan worthwhile. If you want more conversation, a noisy venue may not help. If the issue is exhaustion, an elaborate itinerary may create more work. Our city date ideas offer options at different budgets, but choose according to your own needs.

You can also agree on one ordinary change, such as putting phones away during dinner or protecting an evening from administrative tasks. Review how it felt afterwards. The aim is to learn something about what works for you, not to manufacture a perfect date.

Keep interests outside the relationship

Having a partner does not require sharing every hobby or spending every free hour together. Make time for friendships and activities you enjoy independently, while keeping any shared responsibilities fair.

Tell each other what you need in practical terms: “I’d like Thursday evenings for my class” or “Can we keep Sunday lunch for us?” Do not use independence as a punishment or disappear to make someone miss you.

If what you are missing is emotional support rather than variety, our guide to feeling lonely in a relationship may be more relevant.

An open relationship is a separate decision

Wanting novelty does not automatically mean you want non-monogamy, and neither person has to agree to it to prove their affection. Opening a relationship should not be presented as a cure for boredom or as an ultimatum.

If you both genuinely want to discuss dating others, talk about boundaries, disclosure and what each person can freely agree to before acting. An existing agreement remains in place until you both choose to change it. Joining a dating site secretly does not resolve a conversation you have avoided.

Shag is for dating without commitment; it cannot repair a relationship for you. If you use it while partnered, be honest with everyone involved about your relationship situation and agreements.

JOIN NOW

Review the pattern, not just one good evening

After trying a change, ask whether you feel more connected and whether both people want to keep making space for the relationship. A pleasant outing may be welcome without resolving a bigger mismatch.

If you keep returning to the same unresolved issue, relationship counselling may help you talk it through if you both want that support. You can also reconsider the relationship. Our guide to whether to stay or leave offers questions to help you think, rather than a score or automatic answer.

Feeling bored in a relationship does not, on its own, tell you whether to stay or leave.
