No commitment does not mean no responsibility for how you treat someone. Equally, wanting different kinds of relationship is not, by itself, abusive behaviour.

If you are in immediate danger in the UK, call 999. You can seek help before a situation becomes an emergency. The NHS domestic abuse guidance explains the signs and available support.

FIND PEOPLE NEAR YOU

I'm aMan looking for womenMan looking for men/option>Woman looking for menWoman looking for women

LocationUKEast Midlands - EnglandEast Of EnglandLondonNorth East EnglandNorth West EnglandNorthern IrelandScotlandSouth East EnglandSouth West EnglandWalesWest Midlands - EnglandYorkshire & The Humber - England

JOIN NOW

Look at behaviour, not a personality label

“Toxic” is often used broadly online. Calling somebody selfish, pessimistic or unhappy does not explain what happened, and a list of personality traits cannot diagnose your partner. “They called me names when I declined a date” describes something you can discuss with a trusted person more clearly than “They are toxic”.

Do not turn that into a requirement to build a case or collect enough examples. You are allowed to dislike a dating arrangement, decline another meeting or leave a relationship that does not suit you without proving the other person is bad.

Warning signs that deserve support

The NHS identifies belittling, isolation from friends, monitoring messages or location, financial control, threats, physical harm and sexual pressure as possible forms of abuse. Feeling afraid of a partner, or changing your behaviour because you fear their reaction, also matters. Abuse can affect anyone and can involve an ex-partner.

Consider everyday situations: can you decline an invitation without punishment? Can you see friends without an interrogation? Does a request for privacy lead to demands for your passwords? Do not dismiss a frightening incident because other days have been affectionate.

A disagreement is different from control

An argument about how often to meet is not automatically evidence of abuse. You might prefer two dates a week while the person you are seeing prefers one. Each can explain their preference, and either can decide that the arrangement is not working.

The issue changes when someone uses threats, humiliation or pressure to override the other person’s choice. “I cannot offer an exclusive relationship” is a boundary. Demanding exclusivity while threatening consequences if you leave is a different situation.

For ordinary conflict where you feel safe, the NHS advice on healthy relationships suggests listening carefully, taking time out if a discussion becomes heated, and returning when calmer. It also recommends maintaining boundaries and talking to someone you trust. These are not instructions to confront someone you fear.

If you are unsure what to do next

You might begin with one sentence to a trusted person: “Something happened on a date and I would like to talk it through.” You do not have to decide the entire future of the relationship before asking for support. If you worry that your device is monitored, consider whether it is safe to use it to seek help.

If there is abuse or fear, get specialist advice about leaving safely. The NHS advises seeking support before leaving and being careful who knows your plans. A universal instruction to confront, immediately block or cut off all contact may not fit your circumstances.

If a friend tells you about a harmful relationship

Listen without making them defend every detail. Ask what support they would like, rather than turning the conversation into an argument about why they have stayed. Offering to sit with them while they contact a service may be more useful than telling them what you would do.

Avoid contacting their partner to demand an explanation or posting about the situation online. Those actions can take control of the situation away from your friend. Keep the focus on what they need and on specialist help where safety is involved.

JOIN NOW

UK services you can contact

The NHS lists the National Domestic Abuse Helpline for women on 0808 2000 247, Respect Men’s Advice Line for men, and Galop for LGBT+ people.
