You can plan a date in Bolton without making Manchester the default destination. The town has a free museum, Smithills Hall, a food hall and places for an evening drink or a meal. Choose somewhere that lets you spend time together at a budget you both find comfortable, whether this is a first meeting or a casual date with someone you already know.

Stay in the centre for a museum and Food Hall lunch
Bolton Museum is on Le Mans Crescent and has free admission. You can explore art, local history and the Egyptian collection without paying for a whole day out. Current listed hours are 9am–5pm Monday, Tuesday and Thursday–Saturday; Wednesday opens at 9.30am, and Sunday runs 10am–4pm.
Check the museum service’s notices before setting out. At this review, the Nature Gallery is partly closed for maintenance, and the Laura Knight exhibition has a temporary closure scheduled for 5–9 October 2026. Choose the displays you want to see and leave time to talk rather than trying to cover every room.
For food afterwards, Bolton Market Food Hall offers several cuisines in one place. The official tourism page lists Japanese, Caribbean, Indian and Italian food, plus burgers, pizzas, kebabs and desserts. This is useful when your date wants a different kind of lunch from you: choose separately, then eat together.
The new Food Hall opened in June 2024, making it a more recent addition to the town’s food scene than the original article covered. It has indoor and outdoor seating, a bar and sports screens. Check current trader opening times and prices when choosing your visit; shared seating and a televised match will suit some dates better than a formal restaurant.
Smithills: free history, then something to eat
Smithills Hall, on Smithills Dean Road, is a historic manor house with free admission. Its public visiting hours are Wednesday–Friday, 10am–4pm, and Sunday, noon–4pm. Do not plan a Saturday tour on the assumption that the house follows the tea room’s hours.
For coffee, cake or lunch, Bake & Roast at Smithills Hall publishes Wednesday–Sunday opening from 10am to 4pm, with lunch served noon–2.30pm. A drink and something small to eat keeps the food bill under your control; check the linked menu rather than assuming the visit includes refreshments.
Afternoon tea is a separate, larger commitment. It requires advance booking, and the venue requests a £10-per-person deposit during the week of the booking. That deposit is not the full price. Agree the complete cost and dietary requirements first, especially if this is an early date and you would prefer a shorter meeting.
Keep the evening local: craft beer or a performance
Northern Monkey Bar is at The Pack Horse, Nelson Square. It advertises rotating craft beers, cocktails and an events programme, giving you an alternative to a generic nightclub recommendation. Check the calendar if you want comedy or another event; an ordinary visit does not guarantee entertainment.
The bar lists Tuesday–Thursday opening from 4pm–9pm, Friday noon–11pm, Saturday noon–midnight and Sunday 2pm–9pm. Pick an earlier drink if you mainly want a conversation, and choose how long to stay together rather than treating the closing time as the length of the date.
For a planned night out, browse the Albert Halls programme in Victoria Square. Shows include live music and other performances on specified dates. Choose the actual event together and check its ticket price and start time. The building opens an hour before performances; it is not a walk-in attraction with a show running whenever you arrive.
A dinner worth making a separate plan for
Nick’s Restaurant at Turton Golf Club is at Woodend Farm, Hospital Road, Bromley Cross, rather than in the town centre. Arrange transport before booking it as the second stop after a central bar.
Its sample main menu spans different budgets: Sorrentina pasta is £12.50, the beef burger with fries and coleslaw £15.95, and ribeye with chunky chips £29.95. Drinks and additions cost extra. The restaurant explicitly says its menu changes, so treat these as examples and confirm the current selection.
Nick’s lists Monday–Wednesday as closed, Thursday from 5pm, and Friday–Saturday from noon; Sunday breakfast and lunch have separate service times. A pasta dinner can be a modest meal, while starters, steak and drinks make a larger evening. Decide what you both want before committing to it.
A clear invitation beats a full-day itinerary
For a first meeting, suggest one venue: “Shall we try the Food Hall for lunch?” or “A drink at Northern Monkey on Thursday?” Include a time and leave extra plans open. A free museum visit or short coffee date is also a perfectly reasonable choice when you want to see whether you get along.
