Dundee Contemporary Arts offers a different evening at 152 Nethergate. Choose a film from its actual programme together, then meet beforehand. A cinema gives you something to discuss afterwards, but it is not the place to have your first proper conversation during the screening.
Its programme includes cult and horror events as well as other films. For example, the Dundead Halloween Surprise Preview on 26 October 2026 is an 18-rated mystery film, with standard admission listed at £10. That is a specific event price, not a guarantee that every DCA screening costs the same. Only choose a surprise horror film if both of you enjoy that sort of evening.
Jute: one venue, several food budgets
Jute Café Bar is inside DCA, which makes it an option for a meeting before a film or a standalone food date. Its current August 2026 menus separate breakfast, daytime food and dinner. Use the right menu for the time you intend to arrive.
For a small daytime spend, its breakfast and lunch menu lists a scone with butter and jam at £3.95, a flat white at £3.70 and a breakfast focaccia bun with two fillings at £6.25. Breakfast is served 10am–noon. A scone and flat white therefore total £7.65 per person before extras.
For a fuller evening meal, its dinner menu lists tomato tart tatin at £15.50, chicken Kiev at £18.95 and venison steak at £25.75. Dinner service is published as 5pm–10pm, seven days a week. Drinks, starters and desserts are additional, so agree on a food budget instead of treating a main-course price as the total bill.
The same dinner menu lists an Espresso Martini at £10.25, if you both fancy a cocktail. Coffee and tea are also available; a cinema date does not need an alcoholic drink. Check the live menu and table availability when booking, especially if your meal has to finish before a screening.
Broughty Ferry: make dinner the main event
Collinsons, at 122–124 Brown Street in Broughty Ferry, suits a date where you both want a longer restaurant meal. It is a separate location from the central waterfront, so plan the journey as part of the evening rather than adding it as an assumed next stop.
Its autumn 2026 dinner menu is £48 for two courses or £55 for three, per person. Options include meat, fish and a mushroom, leek, potato and Gruyère pithivier. Cheese carries a £3 supplement. Allow separately for wine, other drinks and any additional charges confirmed by the restaurant.
The restaurant publishes dinner from 7pm and lunch noon–2pm, with Sunday and Monday closures. Book directly by phone and check the current seasonal menu. This is a larger commitment than a coffee, so suggest it when both people want a restaurant evening rather than using it to impress someone into staying longer.
What to agree before you meet
Keep the choice simple: a short design visit, a film with time to chat, a Jute meal that matches your budget, or a booked dinner in Broughty Ferry. Confirm the meeting point, the cost you expect and your own journey home.
If the date goes well, you can decide together whether to extend it. If it ends after the first stop, that is a complete date too. Being clear and considerate matters just as much when you are dating without a commitment.
