Peterborough Date Ideas: Lakeside Lunches, Cathedral Visits and Nights Out

Dating in Peterborough

For a date in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, decide how much time you want to spend together before choosing the venue. Ferry Meadows suits a daytime walk and food by the lake; the city centre gives you museum visits, dinner, cocktails and theatre. Neither needs to become an all-day itinerary, especially when you are meeting someone from a dating site for the first time.

These Peterborough date ideas were checked against official UK venue pages in October 2026. Food prices below are examples, not a complete bill: allow separately for drinks, transport and any extras.

A daytime date at Ferry Meadows

Ferry Meadows is just under three miles from the city centre. Arrange your meeting at a named café rather than saying “somewhere in the park”. Choose a route together using the official walks and trails, and keep the length manageable if you have not walked together before.

There is no need to book a sports activity to enjoy the meadows and lakes. Meet in daylight, use the mapped paths and choose a café-only date if the weather is poor. Car parking is charged: the current tariff is £2.60 for up to an hour or £3.60 for up to two hours. Vehicle entry hours change by season, so check them on the park page before a late visit.

Two cafés, two menus: pick your food budget

The original Lakeside recommendation is worth keeping, with more useful detail. Lakeside Kitchen & Bar, by Gunwade Lake, publishes toast and preserves at £3.75, eggs on toast at £6.95 and a small breakfast at £8.95. Its lunch menu includes soup with bread at £6.50, panini or wraps at £8.95 and a Margherita pizza at £10.95. The page labels this as the summer menu, so confirm the current selection when you visit.

Breakfast service is listed until 11.30am and lunch from 11.30am. The venue does not take table reservations for parties smaller than ten; a date for two is a walk-in, not a guaranteed lakeside table. Food and drinks cost extra to your parking.

The Ferry Meadows Café is a different venue with a separate menu. It lists toast and preserves at £3.25, soup with bread at £6 and a cheese-and-beans jacket potato at £8.50. Specify which café you mean when sending your meeting point. A short walk followed by something inexpensive to eat can be enough for a first date.

A city-centre afternoon without a large food bill

Peterborough Museum & Art Gallery on Priestgate has free general admission, excluding special event days and paid exhibitions. Its published hours are Tuesday–Saturday, 10am–4pm, with last entry at 3.30pm; Sunday and Monday are closed. Pick a few displays that interest you both rather than feeling obliged to spend the entire afternoon there.

For the cathedral, check the current opening and access information before treating it as a free stop. Normal visitor entry is by donation, but temporary exhibitions can change that.

At the time of this review, Mary Queen of Scots: The Exhibition runs from 21 September to 15 November 2026. During that period, sightseeing entry to the cathedral requires an exhibition ticket even if you only want to see the building: £8 per adult or £6 for a student with ID. Recheck the policy for visits after the exhibition ends. Services and closures can also affect a sightseeing plan.

Dinner when you would like to stay out longer

Tap & Tandoor for small plates and a flexible order

Tap & Tandoor is at Cumbergate, Queensgate. Its Peterborough menu lists vegetable kebab at £8.50, paneer tikka at £8.95 and chicken tikka slider at £11.95. These are small plates rather than promises of a full meal at those prices. Choose what to share together, then add the cost of any mains, sides and drinks.

The venue advertises craft beer, cocktails and Monday quiz nights. That gives you a choice of a food-led evening or something more social, but check what is on before expecting a quiet conversation. It also notes that the nearby Queensgate Yellow car park closes at 11.30pm; plan your transport around the car park as well as the pub.

Katana for sushi or a bigger tasting-menu budget

Katana, at 44 Broadway, serves Japanese and Pan-Asian food. The à la carte menu gives you a range of spending options: vegetable gyoza at £7.50, panko chicken katsu at £19 and a five-course tasting menu at £49.50 per person. The tasting menu requires a minimum of two people and the venue says it cannot accommodate dietary requirements on that menu, so check suitability before booking.

If the appeal is seeing food cooked in front of you, ask specifically about the teppanyaki experience. An ordinary restaurant reservation and a seat at a cooking station are not interchangeable. Choose the meal because you both want it, rather than using a large bill to impress someone.

Cocktails or a show: choose the kind of evening you want

For a cocktail venue, Bijou at 51 Bridge Street publishes cocktail, lunch, pizza and evening menus. Its listed regular opening days are Wednesday–Sunday, with Monday and Tuesday closed outside stated holiday exceptions. Check its events page when choosing a night: an event-led evening is a different plan from a drink and uninterrupted conversation.

If you share an interest in live performance, the Key Theatre is another option by the River Nene. Follow the venue’s current programme and choose an actual performance together. Ticket prices, start times and running times vary; leave enough time between any dinner booking and the show.

Meeting someone locally through Shag

Shag is a dating site for adults interested in casual connections. Be clear about whether you want an occasional date, something ongoing without commitment, or are still deciding. Agreement about the plan matters more than an elaborate schedule: suggest a named venue, a time and a budget, then let the other person respond.

Meet in a public place and leave extending the date as a choice for both of you. A meal or cocktail does not guarantee sex, and neither does using a casual dating site. You can enjoy a short first meeting and decide afterwards whether you want another one.
