Browse the individual menus together, particularly if you have dietary requirements or different spending limits.
If you want an activity as well as food, check the Food Dock’s current events. Its October listings include quizzes, painting workshops and wine tasting. Choose a specific event and confirm availability and any ticket charge; do not assume a table reservation includes the activity.
Gloucester dinner budgets: a light meal, pizza or a fuller evening
Café René for pub food and a smaller bill
Café René is a city-centre pub at 31 Southgate Street, rather than simply a coffee shop. Its May 2026 menu lists soup with bread at £6.25 and sandwiches or wraps at £9.95, including a vegan falafel wrap. The sandwich section is available Monday–Saturday; these are examples for a lighter date, with drinks extra.
For a larger meal, the same menu lists Gloucester sausage and mash at £13.95 and beer-battered cod and chips at £18.95. The published kitchen hours finish at 8pm Monday–Saturday and 5pm Sunday, even though the bar stays open later. Book a suitable table if dinner is the main plan.
Trattoria Settebello for an Italian dinner by the Docks
Trattoria Settebello is at Unit B, Merchants Quay, Gloucester Docks. Make sure you choose this branch when booking; Settebello also has a separate Cheltenham restaurant.
Its published dinner sample menu gives you a range within one restaurant: Marinara pizza £13, Margherita £14, mushroom risotto £18 and sirloin steak £29. Those are individual food prices, before drinks, extra courses and any charges shown when booking or ordering. The restaurant labels the menus as samples, so confirm the current prices.
For a meal you want to linger over, agree whether you are keeping to one course or making a fuller evening of it. Spending more does not make it a better first date. The point is to choose a setting and a bill that both people feel comfortable with.
An evening with music: decide how much talking you want
Café René’s official site confirms regular bands, performers and DJ nights. Check its current programme and updates for the artist and entry arrangements. A music night can be a good shared experience once you know each other; for an initial meeting, a food booking or an earlier drink gives you more chance to talk.
The bar publishes Friday and Saturday opening until 3am, with last entry at 1am. That is not a promise of free admission or free concerts. Plan your way home around the evening you actually want, rather than treating a late finish as the default.
