A coffee-only meeting is the lowest-spend café plan here; compare the current counter menu before adding food. The café publishes Monday–Friday 7.30am–7pm, Saturday 8am–7pm and Sunday 9am–4pm. The kitchen closes at 3pm on weekdays and 4pm at weekends, so an early-evening coffee is not a promise of a freshly cooked dinner.
Use New Station Street in the invitation. Laynes also has a bakery in Armley, which is a different destination. A simple “coffee at Laynes at two, then see how we feel” gives both people a clear plan and an easy stopping point.
A weekday food date with a clear starting budget
Bundobust Leeds, at 6 Mill Hill, offers vegetarian Indian street food, vegan choices and communal seating, with some smaller tables and booths. Ask for the seating that suits you rather than assuming every table will be private or quiet.
The Lunch Express menu lists two selected dishes for £11.25 per person, Monday–Friday noon–4pm: £22.50 for two before drinks or extras. Check the eligible dishes; this does not mean any two items on the full menu qualify. The regular Combo for 2 and Vegan Combo for 2 are each £38.50 for the shared food, not per person.
Food starts at noon. The kitchen closes an hour before the bar: 9.30pm Monday–Thursday, 10pm Friday–Saturday and 9pm Sunday. The branch has steps and describes itself as not fully accessible; contact the team about your requirements before booking. Vegan food also requires an allergy conversation where cross-contamination matters.
Make room for art before the galleries close
Leeds Art Gallery, on The Headrow, operates a Give What You Can admission approach, inviting visitors to donate if able. It is a useful way to add an indoor activity without buying an expensive attraction ticket.
Gallery hours are Tuesday–Saturday 10am–5pm and Sunday 11am–3pm, closed Monday. Upper galleries close from 4pm on Saturdays. Check the exhibition programme first and choose a short visit if this is your first meeting. The Tiled Hall Café has separate hours and can be open when the gallery is closed.
Let the artwork give you something to discuss. There is no need to rehearse clever lines or agree on what you like. If one person would rather just have lunch, skip the gallery; a date is something you choose together.
Ox Club for a longer dinner at Headrow House
Ox Club, at Headrow House, 19a The Headrow, is a live-fire restaurant for a more substantial meal. The sample menu currently linked by the restaurant lists a 400g bone-in sirloin at £48 and fries at £5. Two steaks with one portion of fries each come to £106 before drinks, starters, desserts and any applicable service charge.
There are other options on the sample menu, including ramiro peppers at £32. Dishes change with available produce, so confirm the current menu and tell the team about dietary needs when reserving. Choosing an expensive steak is not a way to create an obligation; agree the budget and bill beforehand.
The restaurant publishes Tuesday–Friday 5pm–10pm, Saturday noon–10pm and Sunday lunch noon–7pm. Its access information states that Headrow House has a lift and wheelchair-accessible toilets. Discuss any specific seating requirements directly.
Finish the plan before the last train becomes a problem
Check your return journeys independently and allow time to reach the station. Leeds has plenty of late venues, but you do not need a bar crawl to make the meeting count. Ask whether your date wants another stop, and accept a short evening as a perfectly reasonable outcome.
