Manchester gives you plenty of ways to meet without turning a first date into a whole night out. A coffee in the Northern Quarter, vegetarian street food on Oxford Street and an early steak dinner on Deansgate all make different invitations. Start with what you both enjoy and the budget you are comfortable with.
If you are using Shag for dating without commitment, say that before meeting. “Casual” can mean different things to different people; it does not mean someone will want sex, or that dinner should lead anywhere in particular. Agree on a public venue and keep your first plan easy to finish.

Federal’s Northern Quarter café is at 9 Nicholas Croft. It is a small, busy venue with an Australian café influence, and operates walk-ins only. Arrange a meeting time with some flexibility rather than promising a reserved table.
The current online food and drinks menu lists a flat white at £3.50 and Emily’s banana bread at £6. Two of each come to £19 before extras and any other charges; two flat whites alone are £7. That gives you a light option as well as a full brunch choice. Check the price at the café when ordering.
The Northern Quarter branch opens Monday–Friday 7.30am–4pm and Saturday–Sunday 8am–5pm. It is a daytime plan, not a late-night bar booking. If you want food near the end of the day, ask about the kitchen cutoff.
A shared spread on Oxford Street
Bundobust Brewery is in St James Building, 61–69 Oxford Street. Its open-plan space has communal seating and visible brewery tanks. Indian street food makes this a lively meal date, with dishes to compare rather than a formal course-by-course dinner. The food menu is vegetarian and vegan.
The current menu lists a Combo for 2 at £38.50, including chaat, bhajis, paneer tikka, dhal and other dishes. A Vegan Combo for 2 is also £38.50. Those are food prices for both diners before drinks and other charges, not prices per person. You can order individually if you prefer; tell the team about allergies before ordering.
The brewery serves food from noon, with published kitchen closing times of 9.30pm Monday–Thursday, 10pm Friday–Saturday and 8pm Sunday. The bar stays open at least an hour later. Earlier visits suit conversation better if you do not want the livelier music-and-drinks atmosphere described for evenings.
Name the branch in your invitation: Bundobust Piccadilly at 61 Piccadilly is a separate venue. For a step-free route, the Brewery page describes lift and ramp access; the Piccadilly basement has stairs.
Prefer your own plate? Pizza on Peter Street
Rudy’s Peter Street, in Petersfield House near Deansgate and St Peter’s Square, offers Neapolitan pizza in a casual restaurant setting. It suits a straightforward meal if neither person wants to share a spread or spend the evening over several courses.
The branch lists opening from 11.45am, closing at 10pm Monday–Saturday and 9pm Sunday. Book through the official branch page when you need a fixed time. Use its Peter Street menu link, or ask the team for the current eat-in prices before booking: we could verify the branch, but its online food-menu display did not load reliably during this check. Delivery prices are not a substitute for restaurant prices.
A more dressed-up table: Hawksmoor on Deansgate
Hawksmoor Manchester is at 184–186 Deansgate, in a former Victorian courthouse beside Spinningfields. Choose it when you both want the restaurant itself to be the main event. Reserve a table and agree on the spending limit before meeting.
The early-evening set menu is £26 for two courses or £30 for three: £52 or £60 for two before drinks, supplements and other charges. It includes a choice of side with the main. Availability is Monday–Wednesday 4.30–5.45pm, Thursday 4–5.45pm and Friday–Saturday 4–4.45pm; it is not an all-evening offer. Steak upgrades and sauces cost extra.
For a later meal, compare the à la carte menu. A 350g rib-eye is £42 and beef-dripping chips are £6.50: two steaks and two chips come to £97 before drinks, sauces and any service charge. These are sample menus subject to availability, so confirm the total and any service charge when booking.
Rainy afternoon? Start with something to look at
Manchester Art Gallery on Mosley Street is free to visit without booking, Tuesday–Sunday 10am–5pm. It is closed on bank holidays. Choose a short look around a display you both fancy, then decide whether to add food. There is no need to turn a first meeting into a full gallery tour.
Make the invitation specific
Try “Coffee at Federal on Sunday morning?” for a small commitment, “Street food at Bundobust Brewery?” for a shared meal, or an early Hawksmoor booking if you both want something more formal. Keep the branch, time and budget clear. A busy shopping street is not a substitute for an agreed meeting, and strangers shopping or commuting are not there to be approached as dating prospects.
Meet in public, arrange your own way home and accept a no without trying to change it. If conversation goes well, ask whether they would like to continue somewhere else; an enjoyable first meeting is enough on its own.
