Dating in Exeter does not have to mean booking a whole evening before you have even met. A café lunch, a quayside drink or a daytime walk gives you a manageable first plan. If you already know you get on, there are dinners, shows and outdoor activities worth setting aside more time for.
For people meeting through Shag, the starting point is a shared interest and an honest conversation about what you want. Looking for something casual is perfectly compatible with putting thought into a date. Be clear about that intention before you meet, rather than letting a restaurant booking suggest a relationship neither of you has discussed.
FIND PEOPLE NEAR YOU
Start with the food budget, then choose the plan
“Reasonably priced” means different things to different people. Here are concrete menu examples for Exeter, checked in October 2026. The figures are food prices, not all-inclusive date packages; drinks, extra courses and any applicable service charge need their own allowance.
Under £10 for lunch: Exeter Phoenix Café Bar
Exeter Phoenix Café Bar on Gandy Street works for a coffee meeting or an inexpensive daytime meal. Its August 2026 menu lists jacket potatoes at £8, wraps and toasties at £8.50, and tofu or falafel bowls at £9. The food offering is vegetarian.
Check serving times for the dish you want: wraps and toasties are listed for 11am–3pm, and jackets for noon–3pm. The café usually closes on Sundays unless there is an event. You can keep the meeting to lunch, or look at the venue’s programme together if you both fancy a film, comedy or music on another visit.
Sharing by the Quay: On The Waterfront
On The Waterfront is at 4–9 Southern Warehouse on Exeter Quay. Its current menu offers three small plates for £22.95, with pizza and other dishes available too. Agree whether you are sharing a few plates or ordering a full meal; “let’s get food” does not set a spending limit.
A date-sensitive detail: the independent operators say their lease ends after 2026 and Punch Pubs will take the venue back in early January 2027 for refurbishment and a change of operation. They say it is open as normal for the rest of 2026. For a later visit, check the site again rather than assuming today’s menu and events will continue.

A larger dinner budget: Harry’s
Harry’s, at 86 Longbrook Street, is a family-run restaurant with an online booking option. Its September 2026 menu lists puttanesca linguine at £24, wild mushroom risotto at £25, sirloin steak at £32 and fillet steak at £38. Starters, drinks and desserts add to those figures, so this is a different budget from a café lunch.
Choose it when you both want a sit-down dinner, and book ahead. The restaurant lists Sunday and Monday closures. Its own site describes a busy, lively room, so do not assume a Saturday dinner will be silent or secluded simply because this is a date.
Fancy a rooftop drink instead?
Becketts Rooftop Bar at Hotel Indigo serves cocktails, wine, beer and spirits with views towards Exeter Cathedral. It is an option for a drinks-only evening when neither of you wants dinner. Check availability and the drinks menu through the hotel before setting a budget; a rooftop setting does not mean you need to book a hotel stay.

The Quay is a starting point, not a compulsory itinerary
You can meet for a drink by the Quay and decide whether to continue walking. For a longer daytime outing, Riverside Valley Park is about a mile downstream, between the River Exe and Exeter Ship Canal, with free entry. Devon Wildlife Trust lists both surfaced walking and cycling paths and other paths that can be uneven or muddy. Choose a route that suits both of you and keep an eye on weather and temporary diversions.
If being active is the point of the date, Saddles & Paddles hires bikes and paddlesports equipment from the Quay. Its hire information describes canal paddling; do not treat the river, canal, weirs and locks as interchangeable routes. Ask the operator which route and equipment fit your experience, and check current prices and conditions before booking.
A shared boat or a long ride is more of a commitment than a first coffee. Choose it because you both enjoy the activity, not because it appears on a list of romantic things to do. If one person would rather stay on dry land, food by the Quay is a complete alternative.
Keep the invitation easy to answer
Try something concrete: “Would you like lunch at Phoenix on Saturday?” or “Shall we book Harry’s on Friday?” Include the time and agree the cost before buying tickets or making a booking. If the chat is still tentative, one public meeting is enough; you do not need to promise an entire day together.

Shag can help you start a conversation, but availability, attraction and what happens next depend on the two people involved. A casual connection still needs clear agreement. Make your own travel arrangements and let a good date develop at a pace you both want.
